What am I?
We are western mammals known for our unique armor-like shell and notorious for our digging habits. One us in particular - the nine-banded armadillo - has made its way into the southern United States, and is the focus of this page.

- We are mainly insectivores, with over 90% of our diet consisting of animal matter, like insects and other invertebrates. We are also known to eat the occasional reptile or amphibian - especially in colder weather. The remainder of our diet consists of plant matter, although it's been found that most of the vegetation we eat has been consumed incidentally.
Where do we like to live?
- We prefer warm, moist climates, and thrive in forested areas and grasslands. Because we must dig for our food and shelter, we generally gravitate towards areas with loose, porous soil. Like your gardens or under your foundation.
- We use their strong claws to dig several burrows throughout our home range in which to live and seek refuge from extreme weather or predators. Our burrow is about 7-8" wide and up to 15 feet deep.
